Broadside Poetry Poster

For this project I was tasked with designing a poster for the Poetry International contest winner titled, “Grieve, Goddess Sings, for the Black Sons of America” by Sakinah Hofler. The point of the design was to act as an additive to the poem and combine both type and image to create a cohesive design.

When creating the design I wanted the image to represent the position of the mother. For context, the poem is about an expectant mother facing the worries and challenges of raising a Black son in the United States. I wanted the hands to be reaching up in mourning due to the racism and discrimination her son is going to face while growing up in America.
