White Teeth Redesign

For this project I was required to redesign the cover of a book. I wanted to pick a book that I had read recently and that means a lot to me. I chose to redesign the cover for Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, because the themes of struggling with one’s culture in a predominantly white society particularly resonated with me as a Black trans person.

The image of white teeth can represent perfection and one’s desire to “fit in”. The unnatural white color of the teeth on the cover represents the character’s desire to conform and be someone that they are not. The expressions of the mouths represent the inner feelings of the characters towards each other over the course of their relationships.

When choosing the font I was wavering between a serif font or a more handwritten look. I chose to go with the handwritten style font due to the fact that different chapters of the book are written as if it were the character’s diary. The font has a personal feel to it while also not getting in the way of the design. Overall, I wanted the cover to give the reader somewhat of an idea of the contents of the book and entice them to discover more about the book.
